About this opportunity

The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University runs a residential fellowship for people who use social and behavioural science outside academia: journalists, policy practitioners, consultants, public servants and entrepreneurs. Practitioner fellows spend a semester or a full year at the Center in Stanford, California, alongside academic fellows, sharing how social science is used in their sector and working on a project of their own.

What you get:

  • A place in the CASBS fellows' community at Stanford for the full year (September to May or June), the fall semester, or the winter and spring semester
  • Official Stanford fellow status, with library privileges at Stanford University Libraries and access to Stanford sports facilities
  • Workspace at the Center, library research assistance, desktop support and limited administrative services
  • Small stipends may be available to supplement base salary support or for housing support, decided in spring 2027 after selection
  • Housing support will be considered for fellows moving from more than 15 miles away

What you'll do:

  • Work on a project you propose, described in a one-page project statement
  • Be on site at least three days a week, including lunch at the Center at least three days a week
  • Attend September orientation and the weekly fellows' seminars during your residence
  • Give a presentation on how behavioural and social sciences underlie your work

Key dates:

  • Applications close December 11, 2026
  • Reference letters due December 16, 2026
  • Decisions by email by March 31, 2027
  • Any financial support decided in spring 2027
  • Fellowship year runs September 2027 to May or June 2028, with single-semester options

More information:

Good to know

  • +A pilot launched in 2025-26 that brings non-academics into one of the best-known social science centres in the world
  • +Single-semester options make it reachable for people who cannot leave work for a full year
  • +Free to apply, short application: CV, one-page statement, short answers, one reference

Worth checking yourself

  • !Stanford says only that small stipends may be available after selection; fellows are expected to bring their own salary, and no health care is provided
  • !Built for established professionals with a record of excellence; few young applicants will be competitive
  • !Funding is not guaranteed: small stipends may be available to supplement base salary or for housing, decided only in spring 2027 after selection
  • !No health care coverage or subsidy from Stanford or CASBS; international fellows need proof of insurance for the J-1 visa
  • !You must live within 15 miles of the Center (San Francisco, Berkeley, the East Bay and San Jose do not count) and find your own housing
  • !The general CASBS FAQ shows October 30, 2026, which is the academic fellowship deadline, not this one
