The Institute for Law & AI, an independent think tank advising governments on the legal challenges of artificial intelligence, runs a paid ten week summer research fellowship on its Legal Frontiers team. Fellows work with a mentor on a project of their own or on LawAI's ongoing research, currently focused on law-following AI and automated governance and the rule of law. Who can apply

Most successful applicants have a strong legal background; exceptional candidates from related fields such as computer science, public policy, economics, history, philosophy or psychology are considered
Most successful applicants have a deep understanding of the law and public policy of the United States, the European Union or the United Kingdom; applicants without this are considered only in exceptional cases
Past fellows include final-year undergraduate law students (e.g. LLB), graduate law students (LLM or JD), PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, professionals and law professors
Prior experience in AI-specific research is not required
Full professional fluency in spoken and written English
Able to commit full-time from June 14 to August 20 and to attend the Convening Week in Washington, DC, June 21 to 25
Must hold valid visa or immigration permission for the location you will be based in; LawAI will make every reasonable effort to support visa sponsorship
Candidates wanting to do technical research must find their own qualified technical supervisor
