The Institute for Law & AI, an independent think tank that researches and advises on the legal challenges of artificial intelligence, runs a paid 10 week summer fellowship in Washington, DC, focused on US AI law and policy. Fellows work with a mentor on a project such as a report, a policy brief or a law review article, and may help advise policymakers. It is open to law students, from incoming first years upward, as well as legal professionals and academics with a grounding in US law. **What you get:** - A weekly payment of $2,000 for the 10 week fellowship, with higher amounts possible for exceptional experience or qualifications - A $10,000 relocation and housing stipend if you relocate to Washington, DC (paid as taxable income, no receipts required) - Flights, accommodation and meals covered for the Convening Week in Washington, DC, 21 to 25 June - Admission to LawAI's Summer Institute on Law and AI in July, with flights, accommodation and meals covered - Close mentorship from LawAI research staff and affiliates, and Q&A sessions with leading experts - US law and policy networking, career planning resources, and a route to follow-on grants, events or roles at LawAI - Support with visa sponsorship where possible if you receive an offer **What you'll do:** - Work full time with a mentor on a project tailored to your experience and interests in US AI law and policy - Produce an output of your choosing, such as a law review article or a policy brief, or contribute legal research to LawAI projects - Join regular team meetings, give occasional presentations and give feedback on your cohort's projects - Attend a Convening Week in Washington, DC, from 21 to 25 June 2027 **Key dates:** - Applications close 29 January 2027 at 11:59 pm ET; late applications are not assessed - Final decisions by mid-March 2027 - Fellowship runs 14 June to 20 August 2027 - Convening Week in Washington, DC, 21 to 25 June 2027 - Summer Institute on Law and AI in July 2027 (exact dates not yet published) **More information:** - Selection is an online form of about 20 to 30 minutes, an asynchronous exploratory interview of about 20 minutes, then a 45 minute project interview with LawAI research staff - LawAI says it may use AI to assist initial screening of applications; decisions are made by a person - You may apply to several LawAI fellowship tracks, with a separate application for each - Questions: programs@law-ai.org
