About this opportunity

The Institute for Law & AI, an independent think tank that researches and advises on the legal challenges of artificial intelligence, runs a paid winter research fellowship, from February to April 2027, focused on EU law and the EU AI Act. Fellows are based in Cambridge, UK, work with a mentor on a research project such as a report or law review article, and may help advise policymakers. It is open to applicants from any country, from final year law undergraduates to PhD candidates, practising lawyers and legal academics.

What you'll do:

Work full time with a mentor on an existing project or your own research project on EU AI law
Produce an output such as a report or law review article, or contribute legal research to LawAI projects
Join regular meetings, give occasional presentations and give feedback on your cohort's research
Attend a Convening Week in Cambridge, UK, from 8 to 12 February 2027

Selection is an online form (20 to 30 minutes), an asynchronous exploratory interview of about 20 minutes, then a 40 to 50 minute research interview

Who can apply

Open to applicants from all countries, including those who studied outside the EU or are not qualified to practise law in the EU
Prior legal experience in EU law, through study or work, is expected for this track
Formal legal training of some kind is generally required
Full professional fluency in spoken and written English
Able to work full time for at least eight consecutive weeks within 1 February to 9 April 2027
Able to attend the Convening Week in Cambridge, UK, 8 to 12 February 2027
In-person participation in Cambridge is strongly encouraged; remote arrangements are considered case by case
