The Government Economic Service, the UK's largest employer of economists, places economics undergraduates in paid roles across UK government departments. Students choose either a summer placement of 6 to 12 weeks or a sandwich placement of up to a year out from their degree, working alongside government economists on real policy questions such as housing, climate and public spending. Who can apply

  • Must be in the penultimate year of an undergraduate degree (the year before your final year)
  • Must be on course for a 2:1 or first, based on results so far
  • Degree must be economics, an economics joint honours degree, or PPE, with economics making up at least 50 percent of credits across the whole degree
  • Must have studied both microeconomics and macroeconomics
  • Must have the right to work in the UK and meet the Civil Service Nationality Rules (UK, Irish and Commonwealth nationals, and certain EEA, Swiss and Turkish nationals); no visa sponsorship is offered
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain security clearance; some departments require 3 or 5 years of UK residence with no single period abroad over 3 months
  • Not eligible if you graduate in summer 2027 and plan to go straight on to a Masters
  • No age limit
  • Application is an online form plus an untimed numerical test, both due by the deadline; the test can only be taken once
