Carnegie Mellon University Africa, the Kigali campus of Carnegie Mellon University, runs a six-course online certificate for learners who want to build AI applications for the African context. The courses were designed by Carnegie Mellon engineering professors and mix hands-on work in industry-standard tools with the history and African uses of AI. It costs nothing for qualified applicants, and the next cohort starts on 17 January 2027. **What you get:** - A free place on a six-course online certificate designed by Carnegie Mellon University engineering professors - A digital badge for each course, and a shareable, verifiable certificate once all six are complete - Skills aimed at internships and entry-level roles in machine learning, AI application development, AI product support and AI research **What you'll do:** - Work through six courses of 14 or 15 lessons each, about three hours per lesson and roughly 45 hours per course - Set aside at least five to six hours a week to keep to the expected pace - Take two perspective courses: Artificial Intelligence, Past, Present and Future, and AI and Machine Learning in Africa - Take four technical courses: Python for AI, Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning, Machine Learning Essentials, and Applied Generative AI **Key dates:** - Applications and recommendations open 15 October 2026 - Applications close 15 November 2026 - New cohort starts 17 January 2027 **More information:** - Enrolment is by invitation, based on your application and the space available in the cohort - CMU-Africa also accepts recommendations of learners from employers, instructors, mentors and government or non-profit representatives - The certificate is not for university credit - Questions go to cmuafricacerts@andrew.cmu.edu
