Watson Institute runs this 16-week fellowship with funding from the Truist Foundation for small business owners, entrepreneurs and nonprofit founders whose work expands economic opportunity for underbanked and underserved communities. Fellows get venture and leadership training, mentorship, pitch coaching and a peer network, mostly online, and each one designs and leads a community workshop back home with a $1,000 stipend. Who can apply

  • Aged 18 or older
  • A small business owner, nonprofit leader or entrepreneur with proven results building solutions for underbanked or underserved communities, for example strengthening small businesses, building career pathways to economic mobility or fostering thriving communities
  • Your business or organisation has been operating for 1 to 5 years and has fewer than 10 employees
  • You have engaged customers, measurable results and some financial traction, from grants, investment, donations or revenue. Watson publishes no revenue ceiling
  • Located in and creating impact in one of these states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., Texas, Indiana, Kentucky or Ohio. Applications from anywhere else cannot be considered
  • Able to commit to the full 16 weeks, including the mandatory virtual immersive and the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday sessions from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM ET
