Funded Antarctic Treaty Science-Policy Fellowship
- Organization: Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
- Type: Fellowship
- Location: Global
- Deadline: November 22, 2026
- Funding: Fully Funded
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), a thematic organisation of the International Science Council founded in 1958, runs this annual fellowship to give early and mid-career researchers hands-on experience of Antarctic policy forums. Two fellows join the SCAR delegation in 2027: one at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting and Committee for Environmental Protection in Incheon, Republic of Korea, and one at the CCAMLR meetings in Hobart, Australia. With a SCAR mentor, each fellow turns their own research into a policy paper that may be submitted to the meeting. **What you get:** - Travel, accommodation and daily subsistence paid to attend the meeting: CEP/ATCM in Incheon, Republic of Korea, 17 to 27 May 2027, or SC-CAMLR/CCAMLR in Hobart, Australia, in October 2027 - A place in the SCAR delegation for the whole meeting - One or more SCAR mentors who introduce you to Antarctic policy and governance, help you prepare your paper, help you contact your national delegation and introduce you to other delegates - Guidance to turn your research into a Background, Information or Working Paper; SC-ATS decides whether it is submitted to the meeting, and you may get to present it, though this is not always possible - Possible extra online meetings or activities linked to these forums **What you'll do:** - Before the meeting: draft a Background, Information or Working Paper built on your own research with your mentors and SC-ATS, read the meeting documents, and meet online with the SCAR delegation and, if appropriate, your national delegation - At the meeting: attend the full combined CEP-ATCM meetings or SC-CAMLR/CCAMLR meetings as part of the SCAR delegation - CCAMLR fellow: SCAR will try to connect you with a national delegation so you can present your work at SC-CAMLR working group meetings where appropriate - Afterwards: write a short report for SCAR on what you did and learned, and if possible run outreach to build policy skills among other researchers in your country **Key dates:** - Applications close Sunday 22 November 2026 (SCAR gives no closing time) - CEP/ATCM fellowship expected to start January 2027 - CEP/ATCM meetings in Incheon, Republic of Korea: 17 to 27 May 2027 - SC-CAMLR/CCAMLR fellowship expected to start April or May 2027 - SC-CAMLR/CCAMLR meetings in Hobart, Australia: October 2027 **More information:** - Two fellowships a year, one for the CEP/ATCM meetings and one for the SC-CAMLR/CCAMLR meetings; you choose one on the form - The fellowship pays the costs of attending, not your time: no salary or stipend - Fellows are chosen by a joint Ant-ICON/SC-ATS review group on how relevant their research is to treaty priorities; if no suitable candidate is found, the fellowship is not awarded - Reports from past fellows are linked on the programme page - Apply through SCAR's online form; your referee uploads their letter through a separate reference form
