The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard brings about two dozen working journalists from around the world to Harvard for a paid academic year of study. Who can apply

  • Non-U.S. citizens only, including those working in the U.S. (U.S. citizens apply on the separate U.S. track, closing 31 January 2027)
  • Working journalist with at least five years of full-time media experience; journalism done as a university student does not count
  • Freelancers are eligible; public relations professionals and people whose main work is not the media are not
  • No residential fellowship of four months or longer in the five years before applying
  • Fluent spoken and written English
  • No age limit and no academic prerequisites; a college degree is not required
  • Apply as international (non-U.S. citizens) or U.S. (U.S. citizens) according to citizenship, not where you work
  • Nationals of countries where the U.S. has suspended J visa issuance are advised to wait, unless they hold another citizenship without that restriction
  • Application: two essays (personal statement up to 1,000 words, study proposal up to 500 words), a 100-word professional profile, a 50-word proposal summary, work samples from the last 12 months, and three confidential recommendation letters
