The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard brings about two dozen working journalists from around the world to Harvard for a paid academic year of study. Fellows choose their own courses across Harvard, can audit some classes at MIT and Tufts, and spend the year with a cohort of peers away from the daily news cycle. Applications for the 2027-28 class are open, with an earlier deadline for international journalists than for U.S. citizens. **What you get:** - A stipend of $87,500 paid over nine months to cover living costs - A child care allowance for children aged 12 and younger, from $10,500 a year for one child - A health insurance supplement of up to $6,250 each for the fellow and a spouse, and up to $3,750 per child under 18, if you cannot keep an employer plan - Harvard class costs covered for you and a spouse or partner, who can also audit classes and use the libraries - Help from Nieman staff finding housing, schools and settling in Cambridge **What you'll do:** - Spend an academic year at Harvard, starting around mid-August, auditing classes of your choice and completing at least one course each semester - Join weekly Nieman seminars with Harvard faculty and leading journalists, plus Soundings, where each fellow tells the class why they do what they do - Take narrative nonfiction writing courses and workshops on leadership and dealing with trauma - Optionally be considered for the Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship in Journalism Innovation, working on a project about journalism's digital transformation with the Berkman Klein Center **Key dates:** - U.S. Nieman Fellowship (U.S. citizens, including those working outside the U.S.): applications close January 31, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. ET - U.S. recommendation letters due February 14 - May: U.S. applicants notified and interviewed, with offers shortly after - June: the new class is announced - Around mid-August 2027: the fellowship year begins **More information:** - Dual U.S. citizens should email nieman_applications@harvard.edu to ask which application to use - Named fellowships, such as the Knight fellowship for Latin American journalists, are funded within the same application pool rather than applied for separately
