About this opportunity

The Halifax Regional Municipality's HalifACT climate plan, working with the local climate fund HCi3, is giving microgrants to teams of young people in Halifax who want to run a new climate project in their community. The money comes from the Youth Climate Action Fund of Bloomberg Philanthropies and United Cities and Local Governments, and this is the third round Halifax has run, this time as the only Canadian city funded.

What you get:

A microgrant of $1,400 to $6,600 CAD ($1,000 to $5,000 USD) for one new climate project
Money for supplies, equipment, event and workshop costs, permits, local transit for team members, promotion and documenting results
Up to 15 percent of the grant can cover a fiscal sponsor's administration fee, so a youth team without a bank account can still take part

What you'll do:

Design a new climate project in one of six areas: food, nature and conservation, sustainable energy and transportation, climate justice, circular economy, or adapting and preparing for climate impacts
Run the project in the Halifax Regional Municipality and spend the full grant by April 1, 2027
Past projects include tree planting, community gardens, youth climate cafes, waste reduction and arts-based awareness campaigns

Key dates:

Applications opened August 17, 2026
Applications close September 28, 2026 (an older FAQ on the same sites says September 21, 2026)
All applicants hear back in October 2026
Projects must be finished and all funds spent by April 1, 2027

Who can apply

Aged 15 to 24 and resident in the Halifax Regional Municipality
Apply as a team of two or more young people, or as a youth-serving organisation with youth as the active team leads
The project must be new, take place in HRM, and be led by and serve HRM youth
The money is paid to an organisation with a bank account in its own name; a youth team without one needs a fiscal sponsor such as a school, library, museum or community organisation
Solo individuals, for-profit companies and political or party-affiliated organisations cannot apply
One grant per project; one organisation can host up to three grants for different projects

!The money is paid to an organisation's bank account, not to you. Your sponsoring organisation can keep up to 15 percent
!$6,600 is the most a project can get, not what every project receives
