About this opportunity

The Foundation for Black Communities, Canada's first philanthropic foundation dedicated to Black-led, Black-mandated and Black-serving organisations, is distributing $8 million through the fourth round of its Black Ideas Grant. The grant gives one-year flexible funding to charities, non-profits and groups across Canada working to combat anti-Black racism and improve social and economic outcomes for Black communities. It is funded in part by the Government of Canada's $200 million Black-led Philanthropic Endowment Fund, which FFBC stewards.

What you get:

Core Stream: up to $30,000 for core and operational needs unrelated to programming
Catapult Stream: up to $80,000 to launch new programmes or expand existing ones
Community Spaces Stream: up to $200,000 for capital projects and social infrastructure
Free support to apply: four information webinars, one-to-one coaching calls, and an oral application option

What you'll do:

Choose one stream and submit one application through FFBC's online portal, in English or French
Deliver the funded initiative and spend the funds by March 31, 2028
Complete a mid-term report and a final report, both narrative and financial

Who can apply

Must be Black-led, Black-mandated and Black-serving (B3); at least two thirds of the board and senior leadership must identify as Black
Must be a registered charity, an incorporated non-profit, or an unincorporated group applying with a B3 incorporated partner
Must be based in Canada, with all activities carried out in Canada
The initiative must address at least one focus area: combating anti-Black racism, improving social outcomes, or improving economic outcomes, and align with the Sustainable Development Goals and Social Determinants of Health
One application per organisation, to one stream only; later submissions are disqualified
Community Spaces Stream only: registered and operating in Canada for at least three years, with external financial statements
Organisations funded in B.I.G. 2.0 (2024) or B.I.G. 3.0 (2025) cannot apply; B.I.G. 1.0 grantees in good standing can, though first-time applicants get priority
Not eligible: individuals, for-profits, businesses, universities, colleges, schools, hospitals, municipalities and partisan political organisations
