The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) pays PhD students in health services and policy research, or a related field, to spend a year embedded in a health system organisation such as a hospital, health authority, ministry of health, public health agency or health charity. Who can apply

  • Enrolled full time in a doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH; MD PhD eligible) at a Canadian CIHR-eligible institution by September 1, 2027
  • Studying health services and policy research or a related field
  • Have not previously held an HSI doctoral award
  • Must be a trainee and not hold, or be on leave from, an independent research position
  • Must not be a current or past employee, owner or shareholder of the proposed host organisation, with limited exceptions set out in the FAQ
  • Must have a Health System Supervisor, an executive-level decision maker at the host organisation, who commits to supervision and to the host paying 30 percent of the award
  • Your primary PhD supervisor must serve as the Academic Supervisor
  • For the doctoral stream the host organisation must be located in Canada; universities, research institutes and CIHR-funded entities are not eligible hosts
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents, Protected Persons and citizens of other countries are all eligible for placements with hosts in Canada
  • Must be able to commit at least 60 percent of your time to the host organisation during the award year
  • Must complete a CIHR sex and gender in research module and attach the certificate; official transcripts are required
