The 1834 Foundation, a Canadian registered charity that trains young Black leaders for public service, runs 1834 Global with the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. It is a 9-week, mostly virtual fellowship for Black Canadians aged 20 to 30 who want careers in diplomacy, international development or Canadian foreign policy. Fellows join weekly sessions on global issues, research a real policy question in a coached team, and present their work at an in-person summit. **What you get:** - Weekly facilitated sessions on diplomacy, governance, advocacy and policy design - A place on a policy research team paired with an experienced coach in global affairs - A chance to present your research at the in-person 1834 Global Summit to policymakers, analysts and nonprofit leaders - Entry into the 1834 Global alumni network, now four cohorts strong **What you'll do:** - Commit about 3.5 hours a week for 9 weeks, online - Work in a policy team on a research project tied to a real global issue - Travel to the final in-person summit to present your team's research **Key dates:** - Applications close October 13, 2026 - Shortlisted candidates interviewed in October or early November 2026 - All candidates told the outcome by the first week of December 2026 **More information:** - Apply with a personal statement of up to 400 words, a resume, and two reference letters, one academic and one from an employer or community leader - Referees may send letters directly to Programs@1834foundation.ca - Selection looks at research and writing, leadership, critical thinking, maturity, motivation and language skills
