A STEM club carried school to school since 2021

Gideon Wakama has been installing a STEM club in schools and communities in Lagos since 2021, and he says it has spread into at least two communities.

Since 2021, Gideon Wakama has been carrying a STEM club from school to school in the part of Lagos where he lives. He goes around schools and communities and tries to install the club in each one. So far, he says, it has spread into at least two communities.

The club is his answer to the curriculum. "If we still bank on the main curriculum that we have on ground it's going to really take us backwards," he says.

“I've been able to spread it into at least two communities but it's difficult to spread because I am just one person.”

What gets taught is practical. He lists tech, science for agriculture, and making natural and laboratory fertilizers. He works in renewable green energy himself, and he says the club is "something for children to understand how to generate green energy without polluting the environment." Then mathematics, "which is good for mentals and sound mind."

He has also trained in software development, "but we are at the beginning stage," he says.

He is a student at Miva Open University. The point of the club, he says, is a mental shift in how children and teenagers are prepared, so that they can "become tools for national development."

He puts the aim in one line. "we can raise a Nation from one start point."
