About this opportunity

The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship Program builds on Mongabay’s long-running internship program, which has helped bolster the capacity of environmental journalists in a field where such experience can be hard to acquire. Since 2008, the program has provided training and first-hand reporting experience for dozens of budding journalists in more than a dozen countries. Mongabay interns have gone on to establish careers as professional journalists, communications professionals at scientific institutions and conservation NGOs, and at Mongabay itself.

Builds capacity of young environmental journalists to cover biodiversity hotspots. Fellows gain training, mentorship, and publish six conservation stories. Program builds on Mongabay’s internship program (since 2008). Cohorts by language:

16 English‑language fellows (including 5 focused on oceans in Southeast Asia).
6 Spanish‑language fellows (Mongabay Latam).
6 Bahasa Indonesia‑language fellows (Mongabay Indonesia).
6 Portuguese‑language fellows (Global Bureau).
French‑language fellowship in Africa.

Stipend Fellowship

$500 USD per month for six months.
Total support: $3,000 USD.
Remote work (no visas or relocation supported).

Who can apply

Must be from an eligible tropical country (low‑ to upper‑middle‑income).
Must be an aspiring, early‑career environmental journalist.
Must commit to 10 hours per week remotely.
No formal education requirement.
Application materials:
Resume (1–2 pages).
Cover letter (1 page).
One writing sample (preferably conservation/environment related).
English‑language applicants must submit materials in English.
