About this opportunity

The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS), a climate institute hosted by the University of Victoria and created in 2008 with a B.C. government endowment, gives organisations in British Columbia up to $15,000 to hire a university student for a summer climate action project. Non-profits, First Nations and Indigenous organisations, local and provincial governments, co-ops, social enterprises and private companies can apply. Students do not apply here: the organisation applies, then hires a student from UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic for an internship between late May and late August 2027.

What you get:

  • Up to $15,000 from PICS towards the cost of employing a student intern, paid to your organisation as a grant
  • A place in the programme's cohort model, which creates chances for sharing and learning across the participating organisations and students
  • A guide and resources to help you recruit and hire a student from one of the four PICS universities
  • A PICS launch workshop for your intern, as long as they are hired by April 30

What you'll do:

  • Plan a practical, well-defined climate action project and give the intern three to five specific tasks, such as literature and policy reviews, meetings and engagement events, field or desktop data collection, new guidance resources, or draft reports and plans
  • Choose, hire and supervise a student from UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic, hiring no later than April 30
  • Run the internship between late May and late August 2027; the application form suggests 13 to 16 weeks
  • Share what the project produces so it can inspire climate action in other organisations and communities

Key dates:

  • Applications close November 20, 2026 at 4 p.m. (Pacific time; the page names no time zone)
  • Organisations hear decisions in mid-December 2026
  • Student internship jobs are posted on the PICS Careers page between February and April 2027
  • Hire your student by April 30, 2027, so they can join the launch workshop
  • Internships run between late May and late August 2027

More information:

  • Questions about the application go to picsintern@uvic.ca
  • The application form sits at the bottom of the programme page and has a Save and Resume option; a saved link expires after 30 days
  • To set the intern's wage, the FAQ links the University of Victoria's recommended hourly rates for student research assistants and co-op students
  • PICS funded 30 B.C. organisations in the 2026 round

Who can apply

  • Your organisation must be in British Columbia and be a registered non-profit, a First Nation or Indigenous organisation, a provincial government agency or Crown corporation, a local government, a cooperative or social enterprise, or a private company
  • The intern must be a student at a PICS university: UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic. PICS prioritises internships that give a student in a climate-related field a strong early career opportunity
  • The project must address a climate action goal for your organisation or community, with a clearly defined student role
  • PICS money covers intern salaries and employment-related costs only. Indirect cost recovery, overhead and administration, and capital purchases such as computers, equipment and furniture are not eligible
  • Applications are scored on direct climate value to communities or sectors, a clear purpose and outputs, potential for wider impact through knowledge mobilization, and grounding in justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation (1 to 5 points each), plus a clearly defined student role (satisfactory or not)
  • Priority goes to projects that bring direct climate benefit to B.C. communities and organisations and are likely to inspire further climate action elsewhere

Worth checking yourself

  • !Students do not apply here. Organisations apply, then hire a student from UBC, SFU, UNBC or UVic; students should watch the PICS Careers page from February to April 2027
  • !Only organisations in British Columbia can apply
  • !Closes 20 November 2026 at 4 pm Pacific time, not at the end of the day
  • !$15,000 is a ceiling: it covers the intern's pay and employment costs only, and anything above it is the host's to pay
  • !The FAQ says funds must be used by 31 December 2026, which does not fit internships running May to August 2027; ask picsintern@uvic.ca which date applies
  • !Your intern must be hired by 30 April 2027 to join the launch workshop
