  • Students in grades 9 to 12
  • Historically New England and New York; since Spring 2026 a portion of grants is open to students anywhere in the United States
  • Individuals or teams of students can apply
  • Preference goes to students at public high schools; private school students may apply and will be considered
  • You must find your own mentor, a teacher or a scientist in academia or industry, who supervises the project and writes a recommendation letter confirming they read and gave feedback on your proposal
  • Your principal or head of school (or, for homeschool students, a parent or guardian) must sign a liability statement accepting responsibility for the work, travel and safety
  • The project must be environmental, and designed by you
