OeAD, Austria's national agency for education and internationalisation, runs the Ernst Mach Grant on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Women, Science and Research. The worldwide strand pays doctoral candidates, recent graduates and early-career researchers from any country except Austria a monthly rate to spend 1 to 9 months on their own research project at an Austrian university. Who can apply

  • Open to applicants from every country except Austria
  • Postgraduates enrolled in a doctoral or PhD programme outside Austria
  • Postgraduates and postdocs who completed their studies at a university outside Austria after 30 September 2025 and want to research in Austria with a view to an academic career
  • Postdocs working as researchers at a university outside Austria
  • Maximum age 35 when the stay begins (born on or after 1 October 1991)
  • Very good English and/or German; no official language test needed
  • Written confirmation of supervision from a lecturer at the Austrian host university, on the OeAD template; OeAD does not help find a supervisor
  • Two letters of recommendation from university lecturers, with letterhead, date, signature and university stamp, no older than six months
  • Passport copy, degree certificate, and proof of PhD enrolment or university employment where relevant
  • Not eligible: regular students at Austrian universities, people permanently resident in Austria, those who completed their education mainly in Austria, or anyone who lived, studied or researched in Austria in the six months before the grant starts
  • The grant cannot fund a full or partial Masters, PhD or study programme in Austria
