The California Local News Fellowship is a state‑funded initiative to support and strengthen local reporting, especially in underserved communities. For 2026–2028, newsrooms can apply to host: - Reporting Fellows → 25–30 fellows placed in local newsrooms statewide - Editing Fellows → 5 fellows in a new pilot program (partnered with Maynard Institute) Programme features: - Fellows are placed in selected newsrooms for 2 years (reporting) or 1 year (editing) - Newsrooms must provide mentorship, editorial support, and a clear role for fellows - Fellows focus on producing original local news coverage and meeting community information needs
