About this opportunity

Black in AI Safety and Ethics (BASE) exists to increase Black representation and leadership in the fields of AI safety, Governance, and Security. Our mission is to build a global community that connects, educates, and empowers Black researchers, professionals, and students to shape the development of safe, equitable, and human-centered AI systems, while preventing the gradual disempowerment of the Black diaspora in the age of artificial intelligence.

Duration: 12 weeks (April – June 2026). Tracks:

AI Alignment (Technical ML Safety): interpretability, oversight, agency.
AI Security: cybersecurity, adversarial robustness, threat detection.
AI Governance: policy, standards, systemic risk analysis. Program Phases:
Weeks 1–4: Foundations & Training (seminars, assignments, skill‑building).
Weeks 5–12: Research & Project Development (mentor‑guided project). Capstone Outcomes:
Research preprint.
Technical blog post.
Fellowship or grant application.

Who can apply

Must be currently enrolled in or have completed a BA/BS degree.
Commitment of 20–25 hours per week.
Strong coding/ML skills for technical tracks; policy/governance background for governance track.
Must submit a capstone project.
Application process:
Initial review + references.
Prescreen test (coding or work sample).
Mentor project application.
Final selection by March 2026.
