Environment and Climate

Drawing sea creatures to get the word out about them

Shirley Hwang, a student at White Oaks Secondary School, is planning ocean advocacy that pairs research with her own animal drawings to teach people of all ages about the sea creatures the climate is harming.

Shirley Hwang, Toronto, Canada

"I’ve always had a special spot for animals," Shirley Hwang says. "Small or big they always mattered to me". Since she was young she has been interested in biology, and marine biology in particular.

Her focus is the sea. The climate, she says, is having a significant negative effect on sea creatures, and she wants to help. She has created a few ideas on advocacy and research to get the word out about the struggles of these animals, and she has found friends and like minds. She would be happy, she says, to start planning the ocean advocacy intently.

“The ocean is our heart. It stirs imagination and joy in our souls. So what are we without our ocean?”

Shirley Hwang

She has started extensive research on marine biology conservation methods, alongside bringing awareness to the cause.

Drawing is the other half of it. "I also love drawing especially animals," she says. She is a student at White Oaks Secondary School, and what she would like to do is share her art while teaching people of all ages about these animals.

The ocean may have a brighter future after all, with young individuals such as Shirley.
