Cross-border payments by day, open communities after hours

Artem Goriunov led the rebuild of how cross-border funding transactions are handled at Worldpay, growing the product to billions in annual transaction value, and runs Compassio, the umbrella for a peer-matching platform and a London AI Meetup of more than a thousand members.

Impact Connect and the London AI Meetup began as side projects at midnight, he says. Impact Connect is a peer-matching platform for impact leaders from more than 20 countries, supported by the World Economic Forum's Global Shapers community. The London AI Meetup now has over a thousand members. Both sit under Compassio, which he describes as the umbrella for the things he cares about most.

At work, Artem is a product manager at Worldpay, part of Global Payments, where he drives payment processing performance across a global platform. Much of the job comes down to money movement at global scale, he says, from someone supporting family abroad to an investor topping up a wallet. He rebuilt how those cross-border funding transactions are handled, growing the product to billions in annual transaction value, lifting approval rates and cutting costs so that more money reliably reaches its destination.

“Access is not opportunity. A remittance can arrive on time and still leave someone with fewer choices, just as an introduction can be made and lead nowhere.”

The side projects grew into real communities, he says, "because I believe access to opportunity and to technology should not depend on where you were born."

What he wants to build next under Compassio is a set of lightweight, open tools that help people in underserved markets move and manage money, and learn the skills to use AI well. It is early, he says, but it is the meeting point of everything he does, at work and after hours.

Whether he is building payment infrastructure or a matching platform, Artem says, "the work is the same: making the difference between what people can see and what they can actually do."
