The Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellowship Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and run by IREX. It brings about 250 entrepreneurs aged 25 to 35 from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States for a four-week placement inside a U.S. business in their own sector, after three months of online training. Who can apply

  • Aged between 25 and 35 by January 1, 2027
  • A current resident and citizen of one of the participating countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Bonaire, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela. For Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, Dutch citizenship is accepted
  • A track record of growing your own for-profit business or venture for at least two years; nonprofits are not eligible
  • Eligible to receive a U.S. J-1 visa
  • Not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and not a U.S. government employee or related to one
  • Professional-level English; the application is written in English and English is tested at the embassy interview
  • Available for online activities from March 8 to June 20, 2027 and in the United States from June 22 to July 29, 2027
  • One application per person, in your own words; using generative AI to write or rewrite essays is not permitted
