The Tobin Center for Economic Policy and the Department of Economics at Yale University run a pre-doctoral fellowship for people with a bachelor's or master's degree who are thinking about a PhD in economics or a related field. Fellows spend one to two years on the Yale campus in New Haven as full-time paid research trainees on a faculty member's project, in a cohort of about 70. The 2027-28 cohort is now recruiting, with positions in areas such as development, health care, housing, criminal justice, climate and federal budget policy. **What you get:** - A salary the program describes as competitive with similar programs at other institutions (no figure is published) - Standard benefits, including health insurance - Visa sponsorship for international fellows (J-1), unless a project description says otherwise - The chance to take one Yale course per semester for credit, or audit one for free - A weekly professional development seminar and access to department research seminars - A multi-day orientation and training at the July start **What you'll do:** - Work full time as a research trainee under one or more Yale faculty mentors - Build and clean datasets, run analysis in Stata, R or Python, and help draft papers and reports - Some projects include field travel, for example to study sites in South Asia and East Africa **Key dates:** - Applications for the 2027-28 cohort are open now and reviewed on a rolling basis until positions are filled - 30 November 2026: the date LOT uses, since Yale publishes no closing date - Most positions begin in July, with a multi-day orientation and training - Positions last one year, with an option to renew for a second and final year **More information:** - Each faculty project is listed separately on the apply page; rank up to three on the common application - Some faculty also ask for materials directly; follow their instructions and still submit the common application - Short-listed applicants may be given a data or technical exercise and an interview - Questions: tobinpredocs@yale.edu
