About this opportunity

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research is taking on a Graduate Professional in its Integrated Approaches, Gender and Disarmament Programme in Geneva. You spend six months full time doing background research, helping run meetings, workshops, conferences and field missions, and working alongside senior UN researchers on disarmament, arms control and global security. UNIDIR pays a stipend of USD 1,500 a month, which it describes as a contribution to living expenses rather than a salary.

What you get:

A stipend of USD 1,500 a month, which UNIDIR describes as a contribution to living expenses (Geneva-based)
Six months full time, with the possibility of extension, starting November 2026
Direct work with UNIDIR career professionals and senior management
Exposure to high-profile conferences and meetings on disarmament and global security
If you already receive a stipend from another source, such as your university, UNIDIR tops it up to USD 1,500 rather than paying it on top

What you'll do:

Conduct background research for the Integrated Approaches, Gender and Disarmament Programme
Help plan and run programme activities including meetings, workshops, conferences and field missions
Handle day to day communication, coordination and administration
Take on other tasks set by programme staff

Key dates:

Applications close 16 September 2026 at midnight Geneva time
Programme starts November 2026
Runs six months, with the possibility of extension

More information:

Standard Graduate Professional Programme requirements are on UNIDIR's programme page at unidir.org
Applications go by email to unidir.recruitment@un.org, with UNIDIR GPP IntApp (Geneva) in the subject line
Files should be PDF attachments titled SURNAME_Name_CV-CL

Who can apply

Either enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or graduated with a second university degree and able to start within one year of graduating
Preference goes to post-graduate qualifications relevant to gender, youth and disarmament, for instance international relations, political science, international law or gender studies
No professional work experience required, though experience or interest in conventional arms control is an asset
Fluency in English, spoken and written; knowledge of another official UN language is an asset
Computer literate in standard software including Microsoft Office and graphic design tools such as Canva or InDesign
Submit a cover letter, a PDF of an Inspira Personal History Profile, and answers of up to 250 characters to each of five screening questions
Before starting, you must show proof of valid medical insurance covering the full period of the programme and provide a medical certificate of good health
Incomplete applications, and applications generated with artificial intelligence, will not be processed
Unsolicited applications are not accepted; you must apply to an advertised post
Graduate students and recent graduates from anywhere in the world who want research experience in disarmament, arms control and global security. You need to be enrolled in a second university degree or higher, or to have completed one and be able to start within a year of graduating, so undergraduates cannot apply. A background or interest in gender, youth and disarmament helps for this particular post, and fluency in English is required.

Worth checking yourself

!UNIDIR calls the $1,500 a contribution to living expenses, not full cover, and Geneva is expensive. If you already hold a university stipend it is levelled to $1,500 rather than added to it
!You must show proof of medical cover for the full six months at your own expense, and the UN states it takes no responsibility for it
!Whether you pay your own relocation and visa is not stated on the current pages, and their own earlier announcement for this post said you did
!You need to be enrolled in or have completed a second university degree, so undergraduates are out
!Applications written with AI are rejected
!Closes 16 September at midnight Geneva time

What we could not confirm

?Travel and relocation costs: not stated on the current post announcement, so it is unconfirmed whether the participant pays. Ask UNIDIR at unidir.recruitment@un.org, or publish with the silence stated rather than a claim
?Visa and Swiss residence permit: not stated on the current post announcement. The same question applies and the same instruction
?Accommodation: not stated. UNIDIR offers no housing support on any page read, but it does not say so explicitly either
?Amount of the compulsory medical insurance: UNIDIR requires it and names no figure. The Geneva Graduate Institute's published student budget puts student health cover at CHF 60 to 400 a month plus an annual deductible of CHF 300 to 2,500. That is a Geneva benchmark, not a UNIDIR number, and must not be published as one
?Age limit: none appears on any UNIDIR page read, so age Min and age Max are null. Read that as not stated, not as confirmed absence
?Nationality restriction: none appears on any UNIDIR page read. Same reading
