About this opportunity

Third Wave Fund runs a rapid response fund for gender justice groups in the United States that need money fast. It is for organisations that have to pivot from their planned work because of something that happened in the last six months, whether that is a threat to their community or a sudden opening they cannot let pass. Applications run on monthly cycles and you can apply in writing, by selfie video, or over the phone.

What you get:

Up to $10,000 for a single organisation or group
Up to $20,000 for a partnership or coalition of two or more groups
Funding you can use for rapid response mobilisations, healing justice work, legal or bail fees, mutual aid, marches, emergency safety and security, leadership training, and conflict resolution
Three ways to apply, so a written proposal is not the only route: a one page written narrative, a video of up to ten minutes, or a scheduled Zoom or phone interview
A decision within four to six weeks of the deadline, with funds usually released five to eight weeks after by ACH direct deposit

What you'll do:

Set up an account on the Fluxx grant portal at proteus.fluxx.io, at least three business days before the deadline if you are a new applicant
Submit contact details, a group description, and a one or two sentence summary of the request
Upload your group or organisation budget for the current year, plus IRS or fiscal sponsor paperwork if you have either
Answer five narrative questions covering your purpose and structure, your accountability to the communities you serve, the incident you are responding to, how you are pivoting, and the impact you expect

Who can apply

Open to gender justice organisations, groups and coalitions, not to individuals
Must be based in the United States or a US territory
Group or organisation annual budget must be under $500,000
Must be responding to a specific incident or change in circumstance from the last six months that forces a significant pivot from planned work
Your analysis must connect the issue to patriarchy, transphobia, homophobia, gender inequity or gender based violence
Not for budget shortfalls, ongoing programmes, start up costs, fundraising, or long term campaigns beyond six months
501c3 status and fiscal sponsorship are not required, and groups without either are prioritised
Gender justice organisations, groups and coalitions based in the United States or a US territory, not individuals. Third Wave Fund states plainly that projects led by individuals are not prioritised. Groups must have an annual budget under $500,000, and the fund prioritises groups whose leadership is rooted in and accountable to communities directly affected by gender oppression. Groups without 501c3 status or fiscal sponsorship, and groups in areas with little access to philanthropy, are prioritised.
