About this opportunity

A global research grant supporting PhD students and early career academics conducting research on the Olympic Movement, Olympism, and the Olympic Games. You'll receive financial support for your research project and may get funding to visit the IOC Olympic Studies Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland. The programme gives you access to extensive Olympic archives, historical collections, and the Olympic World Library with thousands of publications on sport and Olympism. You'll join a network of over 140 researchers who have advanced Olympic studies since the programme began in 1999, gaining international academic recognition while contributing to scholarship on the social, cultural, historical, and political impact of sport in society.

Who can apply

Open to current postgraduate students enrolled in PhD degree programmes within the humanities and/or social sciences whose research focuses on Olympism, the Olympic Movement, or the Olympic Games as one of the core themes of their academic work. Applicants must already have a clearly developed research framework, including literature review, theoretical grounding, and methodology related to their proposed study. Also open to Early Career Academics, including academic staff members and postdoctoral fellows who completed their doctorate or equivalent highest qualification in or after 2023. Early Career Academic applicants must hold a valid academic or research appointment that covers the duration of the grant period.

Good to know

+The documentation is unusually complete: a nine-section official rules PDF covering objectives, eligibility, procedure, an exact deadline with timezone, awards, expenses covered and not covered, selection criteria and a payment schedule
+The award and its limits are stated precisely: a maximum of 6,000 US dollars, paid half on contract confirmation and half on the final report
+Beyond the money it funds a research visit to the Olympic Studies Centre in Lausanne and access to the IOC historical archives and a 42,000-publication library
+Two optional online information sessions with questions and answers are offered before the deadline
+Deep credibility: running since 1999 with more than 148 researchers supported
+Applicants may reapply with the same subject once more, provided they explain how the application has improved

Worth checking yourself

!The audience is narrow. Only for PhD students in a humanities or social sciences doctorate with Olympism as a research focus, or academic staff who completed their doctorate in or after 2024. Not a general youth opportunity
!Explicitly excluded and strictly applied: natural-sciences perspectives, collective applications, previous grantees, and topics falling under other sports bodies
!The grant pays research expenses, not the researcher. Salary, tuition, institutional overheads and hardware are all excluded
!The application requires third-party documents that take time: institutional proof on letterhead, a signed supervisor recommendation, and where human subjects are involved an ethics certificate. All must arrive by the deadline
!Applications must be in French or English only
