The Overseas Press Club Foundation, the New York charity linked to the Overseas Press Club of America, gives about 18 awards a year to college students who want to become foreign correspondents. Winners get either $3,000 for their own reporting work or a $4,000 fellowship that pays for time in the bureau of a major news organisation such as the Associated Press, Reuters or Bloomberg. You apply with a one-page cover letter, a one-page resume and one piece of international journalism in print, photo, video or audio. **What you get:** - Either a $3,000 scholarship for independent work, or a $4,000 fellowship to fund time in a bureau of a leading news organisation such as the Associated Press, Reuters or Bloomberg - A place at the Scholar Awards reception in New York City in March 2027, part of a two-day series of events with training and networking with professional journalists - Membership of the Foundation's long-running network of international journalists and past Scholar Award winners **What you'll do:** - Write a one-page autobiographical cover letter on how you came to journalism and to a particular region or international issue, and how you would use the award - Send a one-page resume covering journalism experience, languages, media skills and your visa or passport status for working overseas - Submit one work sample: a 600 to 800 word print piece, a photo essay with about 500 words of context, or a two to seven minute video or audio piece with about 500 words of context - If you win, attend the March 2027 events in New York, which the Foundation says winners are required to do **Key dates:** - Applications close Sunday, November 15, 2026 - Winners contacted by mid-January 2027 and posted on the Foundation's website - Scholar Awards reception and two days of events in New York City, March 2027 **More information:** - Everything goes in one .docx or .pdf file named Lastname_Firstname, no larger than 10MB, uploaded through the Foundation's submission form - Do not send clips or URLs for the writing sample; reformat published work as a standalone document. Links to other work can go on your resume - Four of the 18 awards are reserved for international business or economic coverage, so applicants interested in trade, finance, emerging markets, immigration, climate or public health economics are encouraged to send a sample in that area - You do not need to have travelled abroad to apply; past winners reported on immigrant communities in New York - All material must be your own journalism, any AI use must be clearly disclosed, and everything must be in English (send a translation if the original is in another language) - Questions go to Katri Reilly, Executive Director, at katri@opcofamerica.org
