Mzuri Wildlife Foundation is a California charity, founded in 1969 by members of a safari club, that funds small community-level organisations protecting wildlife and their habitats anywhere in the world. Grants of $5,000 to $15,000 back grassroots work where a single grant makes a pivotal difference: habitat enhancement, anti-poaching patrols, wildlife research, and outdoor education that connects young people and women to the natural world through hunting, fishing and other outdoor sports. The foundation funds registered nonprofits rather than individuals, and the route in is a short letter of inquiry.

Who can apply

The applicant must be a tax-exempt nonprofit organisation. Mzuri does not fund individuals or for-profit entities
Organisations outside the United States must provide proof of tax exemption or proof of a US-based fiscal sponsor
The project must have an immediate, measurable and positive impact on wild game conservation, habitat improvement, or outdoor sports and environmental education
The organisation or project must have a proven track record
The project must be grassroots in scale and achievable on a grant of $5,000 to $15,000
The project must be supported locally and judged important by Mzuri representatives, hunters, guides and conservationists who live and work in the affected region
The project must be completable in one year and carry measurable goals and objectives
Mzuri directors and staff must be able to observe the project first hand during the project term
Financial data must be reported in US dollars
Not funded: governmental organisations, third party funding conduits, political action committees or campaigns, purchase of firearms, general fundraising benefits and events, fellowships or other university projects
Capital equipment is funded only where essential, and Mzuri retains the right to repossess or redirect it if the programme ends or changes focus
Existing grantees are not eligible for further funding until progress reports on the prior year have been submitted
An organisation that has received Mzuri funding in the last two years does not need to submit a letter of inquiry
