About this opportunity

Mozilla Foundation's Incubator is backing Human-Scale AI: small, bespoke AI technologies built around the real needs of a specific community, rather than chasing a billion users. Selected projects receive $300,000 and a year of coaching from April 2027, and projects that show strong progress receive a further $200,000 and two more years of support, with no equity taken.

What you get:

  • $300,000 for each selected project, with support starting in April 2027
  • 12 months of tailored coaching, technical expertise and community-building support
  • A further $200,000 and two more years of support for projects that show strong progress, so up to $500,000 over three years
  • No equity taken
  • Access to Mozilla's global network

What you'll do:

  • Keep building a working AI technology with the community it serves, as one of seven projects in the cohort
  • Work with Mozilla Foundation's coaches and technical experts for 12 months from April 2027
  • Show strong progress in the first year to unlock the second $200,000 and two more years of support

Key dates:

  • Applications close Friday 20 November 2026 at 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time (UTC minus 8)
  • Online info session on 12 November 2026 at 5 pm UTC (12 pm Eastern, 9 am Pacific); registration details to come
  • All applicants hear back by late February 2027
  • The funded year of support starts in April 2027
  • Projects that show strong progress can continue for two more years

More information:

  • Apply in two stages: an initial project proposal through Mozilla's online form, then a full application if you are shortlisted
  • Mozilla is funding seven projects in this cohort and has already chosen three anchor projects: Tiles, the Distributed AI Research Institute and Family Intelligence
  • Applications that look heavily AI-generated may be subject to further review; AI tools are fine for brainstorming, clarity or translation
  • Questions go to incubator@mozillafoundation.org

Who can apply

  • A working technology already deployed with the people it is designed to serve, even at a small scale or in an early pilot; an idea or wireframe alone does not qualify
  • Early evidence of product-community fit: users, contributors, community involvement, partners or others building on your work
  • The project must follow all three Human-Scale AI principles: small (efficient models and compute), intentional (users and communities have agency over data and the system) and tailored (built for a specific problem and community)
  • Primarily technical projects only; work mainly about philosophy, academic exchange, cultural production or community education is not eligible
  • You must be legally able to receive grant funds from Mozilla Foundation, and any team selected must be able to receive funding from a US-based 501(c)(3) organisation. You do not need to be a nonprofit, but your project must have a charitable purpose; for-profit applicants must make that case clearly, and Mozilla often recommends a fiscal sponsor
  • Any team structure is fine if it can carry out the work you propose
  • Applications are in English; translation tools are welcome
  • Not wanted: generic chatbots, projects whose core depends on a frontier model, standalone governance or research projects without a working technology
