Monash University's Faculty of Arts is offering up to five PhD scholarships for researchers who want to study how artificial intelligence is reshaping society, and how human values, cultures, politics and institutions are shaping AI in return. Scholars join a 3.5-year, full-time PhD on the Clayton or Caulfield campus in Melbourne, working alongside existing Monash Arts research projects on topics such as AI companionship and young people's wellbeing, public resistance to AI, AI and democratic life, and the future of music and screen work in an age of generative AI. **What you get:** - A Research Living Allowance of AUD 41,100 per year (2027 full-time rate), paid as a tax-free stipend and indexed, plus allowances under Monash's RTP stipend scholarship conditions - A 3.5-year fixed-term PhD candidature at Monash Arts, based at the Clayton or Caulfield campus in Melbourne - Access to international mobility grants, professional development training and opportunities for industry engagement - Supervision from internationally recognised Monash Arts scholars on a suggested project list, or on an aligned topic of your own **What you'll do:** - Discuss your research proposal with an aligned prospective Monash supervisor before applying - Undertake a full-time, on-campus PhD examining the human, social, ethical, political, cultural, economic or creative consequences of AI - Work within one of the suggested project areas, for example AI companionship and young people's safety, public resistance to AI in everyday life, AI for inclusive ageing and care communication in CALD communities, AI and democratic participation, generative AI and music labour markets, AI and screen aesthetics, automation in warehouse and logistics work, auditing algorithms for discrimination, or digital inequalities in an age of AI - Commence the PhD no later than 12 March 2027 **Key dates:** - Applications close Wednesday 30 September 2026, 11:55 pm AEST - Successful applicants must commence no later than 12 March 2027 **More information:** - Full call, suggested project titles and supervisor contacts on the Monash jobs portal listing - PhD eligibility and English-language requirements for the Faculty of Arts at arts.monash.edu/graduate-research/application-process/ - Stipend conditions at www.monash.edu/graduate-research/future-students/scholarships/scholarship-policy-and-procedures
