Who can apply

  • At least five years of professional experience. Student work and internships do not count towards the five years
  • No college degree or experience inside a traditional newsroom is required
  • Open to people directly producing journalism in any capacity, people in operations or strategy roles at news organisations, and people at organisations that support or collaborate directly with journalists
  • Employees and independent contractors both qualify. Freelancers must do the majority of their work in journalism
  • Open to U.S. and international applicants. If the community you serve is mainly in the United States you would typically apply for the U.S. fellowship, otherwise the international one; a few profile questions in the application portal decide which
  • Citizens of a country where the United States has suspended J visa issuance cannot be offered a fellowship, unless they also hold citizenship and a passport from a country without that restriction
  • Proficient written and spoken English. Materials are submitted in English, and a work sample in another language can go in with a brief English summary. No TOEFL scores needed
  • Not open to people seeking a degree, people in public information or public relations, people producing in-house or industry communications, government employees, full-time academics, or anyone working for or with organisations that are not editorially independent, such as government-operated media
  • JSK does not fund book or reporting projects and is not a startup accelerator
  • You apply with an online form about your background and goals, a resume, a work example and contact details for three professional references. No reference letters
  • Past applicants may reapply with a new application, and former journalism fellows at other universities can apply
