The Empirical Study of Gender Research Network (EGEN), working with Johns Hopkins University, funds junior political scientists doing empirical research on gender and politics. It awards several prizes of $1,000 to $3,000 to graduate students and very early career scholars, with several $500 honorable mentions alongside them. Winners are also matched with a mentor from EGEN's executive board for the coming year. **What you get:** - One of several prizes of $1,000 to $3,000, or one of several $500 honorable mentions - A mentor from the EGEN executive board, matched to you for the coming year - The money is yours to put into your own research. EGEN's own write-ups of past winners say the prize funded fieldwork, original survey data collection, survey experiments and archival work - EGEN says on the application form that it is also open to supporting book writing, including book workshops and copyediting fees **What you'll do:** - Complete EGEN's application form with your career stage, your primary research interests, your fieldwork site or primary data, and the title of your most polished piece of work on gender and politics - Explain how the prize would benefit your research programme, including your current funding, your institutional support and anything that has interrupted your work such as caring responsibilities - Upload an anonymised CV and an anonymised copy of your most polished piece of writing as PDFs to EGEN's Dropbox file request, named lastname_firstname_CV.pdf and lastname_firstname_writing sample.pdf, then confirm in the form that you have uploaded both - Name three people from EGEN's executive board, past or present, you would want as your mentor - Graduate students also give an advisor's name, affiliation and email, and a timeline for finishing the dissertation including when they plan to go on the job market **Key dates:** - Applications close Thursday 15 October 2026 at 11:59 pm Eastern Time **More information:** - Submissions must be in English - Coauthored work is eligible as long as every co-author is also eligible for the prize, meaning a fellow graduate student or early career scholar - Submissions must be original and not generated by AI - The CV and the writing sample do not go through the form. They upload to a Dropbox file request at https://www.dropbox.com/request/mm8qfemhpgietltcb0l7 and both must be anonymised - EGEN's prizes page lists every awardee since 2022, what each prize funded, where that person is now and what the project has since published. It is an unusually concrete guide to what wins - The prizes have been supported by NSF grant number 2215500, and EGEN says it has awarded more than $100,000 in research prizes - EGEN does not publish a notification date for 2026. It announced its 2025 and 2024 results on its own Bluesky account in April of each year, so expect spring, not autumn
