About this opportunity

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria runs an annual round of small development grants for community projects in the nine countries it is accredited to, as part of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs' development cooperation programme. Each project receives between 200,000 and 500,000 CZK, and the money is meant for the work itself: the implementer's administrative costs cannot be funded, and expert fees, travel, accommodation and insurance together must stay under 25 percent of the total. It is open to non-governmental, non-political organisations with legal personality in the country where the project would run, and the embassy asks for three reference letters showing similar development work already delivered.

What you get:

A Czech government contribution of 200,000 to 500,000 CZK for one project
Co-financing from other sources is welcomed and desirable, but it is not required
A contract with the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed with the embassy in the first quarter of 2027
Association with Czech Aid, the Czech Republic's official development cooperation brand

What you'll do:

Deliver a project aligned to the host country's development priorities, with emphasis on skills, community development and job creation
Run the project between March and October 2027, starting only after the contract is signed
Account fully for the funds by 15 October 2027
Mark the project's tangible assets with the Czech Aid logo, and credit Czech development cooperation on intangible outputs
Show the project can carry on without further financial support from the Czech Republic

Key dates:

Applications close 15 September 2026
Contracts signed with successful applicants during the first quarter of 2027
Implementation period March to October 2027
Project completed and funds fully accounted for by 15 October 2027

More information:

Full call, submission checklist and the SSP Identification Form on the embassy's Trade and Economy pages
Proposals go by email to smallscaleprojectscz@gmail.com with the subject 'SSP 2027: name of the implementer'
The Small-Scale Projects instrument is described in the Czech MFA's CzechAid 2024 annual publication

Good to know

+Between 200,000 and 500,000 Czech koruna for a community development project, roughly EUR 8,000 to EUR 20,000
+Applying is free and you submit by plain email, with no portal or account to set up
+Funded by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its embassy in Pretoria, so the money and the process are governmental rather than a private call

Worth checking yourself

!Closes 15 September, which is eight days away, and you need three reference letters covering previous similar projects. That is not something to assemble in a week from a standing start
!Only nine countries qualify: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa
!Your organisation must be a registered non-governmental, non-political body with legal personality in the country where the project runs. An individual cannot apply
!Proposals go to a Gmail address rather than an official ministry one. That looks irregular but it is printed on the government's own page and is genuine
!The call gives a date but no closing time, and the embassy is in Pretoria, so treat South African time as the safe assumption if you are applying from Angola, Mauritius or Madagascar
