ARTEFFECT, the visual arts initiative of the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes, runs a free annual art competition for middle and high school students anywhere in the world. You choose an Unsung Hero, someone whose courage or service changed other people's lives without much recognition, create an original artwork about them and write a 500 to 1,000 word Impact Statement. Who can apply

  • Students in grades 6 to 12
  • International entries accepted
  • Individual entries only; group projects are ineligible
  • One entry per student
  • Student and parent or legal guardian digital signatures required
  • Your classroom teacher must be named on the form to confirm enrolment in a middle or high school
  • Generative AI may not be used in any part of the final artwork, and no AI tools at any stage of the Impact Statement
  • Students who have already won two top ARTEFFECT awards are not eligible
  • Impact Statement must be in English
